To pose the fire you have 6 flame parameters and a taper parameter as well as the standard scale dials. Each of the flame dials will give you a range of shapes, in general you can dial between -3 to 3 with all but Flame 5 and Flame 6 with no problems, 5 and 6 can be used from -1 to +1 with larger values being usful to balence the effects of other combinations. Taper lets you fine tune the flames. As with most things, experimentation is the best way to get what you want.

To animate effectively I recomend that you start by making a keyframe every 1 or 2 seconds for each flame dial - it is most effective if the values are not in synch with each other and don't worry at first if the settings seem to look good or not. Next go to each keyframe and adjust the taper and the scale dials to make the change from one key frame to the next look natural. Keep in mind that the flames when rendered will not be a solid image like they are when you are setting them up. Past that, experiment a bit and adjust the flame between keyframes if you need to.
